The annual Fun Fair can never be the huge success it is, without our community’s support. Our ever popular BOOK and TOY STALL cannot happen without your generous donations. Please could you check your bookshelves and toy boxes for gently used books and toys that you wouldn’t mind donating. We would greatly appreciate any toys and books of any genres, age group and language! Clearly labelled collection boxes are located on all campuses and all proceeds from the Fun Fair will be donated to ISS supported charities. It was great to see everyone in red and Chinese costume today to celebrate the Lunar New Year. You are all encouraged to dress up again next Friday, February 3rd, for the annual Lion Dance Performance. The Performance will start at 1:30 in the ES Playground and parents are welcome to attend. Elementary School News
Grade 4 students recently finished up a design project where they re-purposed old musical instruments from Ms. Marnie's classroom to create new and practical objects. Each student came up with an original idea and each class then voted for the most effective one within each class. We ended up with wind chimes for our student garden, an alternative bell for both playgrounds, and a model of the solar system. Next time you are on campus, please have a look. Literacy week, February 6-10 2017 During the week beginning February 6th, students at ISS will be participating in Literacy Week. Activities will consist of an author visit from the Brisbane author of the Stinky and Jinks and Squirrel Boy series, Dave Lowe, Mother Tongue story reading from Middle School Students, storytime sessions from Mrs Grant in the library, opportunities to contribute student work to the ISS Library and the Book Character Parade on Friday 10th, amongst others! A Sense of Place: Authors and Illustrators competition. Students have been encouraged to submit an artwork or a piece of writing about a place that is important to them, be it a special room, an outdoor place or a whole country! Fiction and nonfiction are welcome as well as pieces in mother tongue. Prizes will be announced on Friday 10th February for the best entries from each grade level. Please encourage your child to think, write or draw about an important place over the Chinese New Year break. Entries are due on Monday the 6th February. Book Character Parade: Friday 10th February 8.10am The 2017 Book Character Parade will start in the Reception corridor, turn left around the ES playground, left again towards Room 9A (Ms Thompson) down the stairs, through the canteen and up the back stairs to the Middle School, past the library and back to class. All parents are welcome to cheer the students on and help guide the parade along the way. Get your costumes ready! Talented Teachers Nathan Horne led a workshop on ‘Physical Education With A Purpose’ in Vietnam. Meghan Luttrell led a PYP workshop for teachers at an international school in Korea. A wonderful array of talents were seen on Sambutan (assembly) this week with performances from the Mandarin students for Lunar New Year festivities. As well in Sambutan, the school as a whole has been working with Beth Contreras, the school counsellor, on being more empathetic. Great work Beth and students for a very worthwhile pursuit. Even as I type, the campus is a sea of red as we celebrate Lunar New Year. Staying with that theme next Friday (3rd February) Paterson Campus will host the famed lion dance to welcome in the year of the rooster. Into the Woods continues to build toward, the performances at the PTA fair, and ultimately the performance in May. Rehearsals are a hive of activity and commitment from both students and teachers alike. The boys soccer team continues to put in excellent performances going down narrowly to YBIS 3-2 on Thursday. They have two remaining games and parents, guardians and friends are most welcome to come along and support the team. Our Grade 8 parents started the next phase of the child’s learning at the Welcome to High School morning on Friday. It’s a truly exciting time as students transition from Paterson to Preston Campus and begin Grade 9. Literacy week in Paterson Campus is a great time to explore the wonders of books. Many activities are happening, including the Random Reading Competition (ask your son or daughter!) Thanks to the Literacy Week committee. One of our teachers leaves us this week as Mrs Nicole Johnson relocates with her family. Nicole has been a wonderful colleague to work with and her contributions to the Language Acquisition programme have been immense. After a long association with ISS we wish her and her family happy travels. Her position will be very ably taken up by Mr Rene Contreras, who himself has a wealth of experience and enthusiasm for delivering English language support in the classroom. Lastly, in the year of the rooster may it be a healthy and prosperous one for everyone.
