Amazingly we have reached the end of the 1st Semester of the 2016/17 academic year. The 18 weeks since August have flown by and I am sure that all of the students have their own special memories of what they have achieved since the start August. It has been a pleasure to see the students grow and develop in the last 5 months.
As this will be the final blog before the December break I'd like to wish all of you very happy holidays and a very Merry Christmas to those of the community who will be celebrating Christmas. I hope you all have had a great 2016 and that 2017 will be even more exciting and enjoyable. Reports Issued Thursday 15th December Thursday 15th December: Reports will be posted on ManageBac. Elementary School News Thank you to those who were able to make the Elementary School Performing Arts Concert, The More the Merrier. It was wonderful to see how empowered our students were to take the lead from the script writing, sound and special effects, costume design, choreography and finally performing themselves. Once again, thank you to everyone who supported and helped ensure the evening was a success. As we head into our last week of Semester 1, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family happy holidays. We have had a wonderful first semester and I am looking forward to Semester 2. The second last week of Semester One started on a high with the students, under the guidance of Mr Lebon and Mr Ballinger, attending the Eurasian Society Christmas lunch. The students performed for the entire group, sung songs, and generally interacted and lent assistance wherever possible. The true epitome of the an International Baccalaureate learner being caring. The afternoon was a resounding success and the Eurasian Society were very gracious in the thanks towards our students. Continuing on a theme of giving. On Wednesday, Mr Ballinger launched the Food Bank drive. This is in support for people in Singapore that are not as well off and require donations of food to live day to day. This Food Drive culminates in the Service as Action day on Thursday 15th December, when ISS Middle School will Walk Towards Zero Hunger and Beach cleanup. Parents and guardians are more than welcome to join us on this day for the walk, the cleanup and or both. A letter has gone home with the details. Giving was all the rage in MS this week. On Wednesday, Marie Chammal, visited us from Sok Sabay in Cambodia. Marie is the Founder and Executive Director of this charity. ‘Sok Sabay is a registered charity in Paris- France – May 1995 (J.O.) which rescues children from domestic violences, tortures, abandon and all forms of child exploitation. Sok Sabay is a non political nor religious association.’ (http://www.soksabay.org/home/) ISS has been working with Marie, through the efforts of Mr Lebon, for eight years. In this time ISS has sponsored the education and provision, continuously, for three Cambodian students each year. This year we happily undertake that commitment again and look forward to a long relationship with Marie and the children of Sok Sabay. Next Thursday, 15th December, Semester One reports will be sent via ManageBac. Please take the time to sit down with your child and go through the report. It is an important time, not only for the students but also the parents! Her photograph of Sentosa is featured for the month of July, 2017 in the Allied Pickfords Calendar. ISS Competition A Sense of Place is a competition for authors and illustrators. Through writing, art or both, students explore what it is that makes a place special to them, whether it be a special room in a house, a garden, a city, landscape or a whole country. During the break, take some time to have a conversation with your child about what a special place means to them, and encourage them to think about the medium in which they would best like to express their ideas. Entries will be due on Monday 6th February and prizes announced on Friday the 10th of February at the end of literacy week. For the authors’ submissions, writing will be judged on the 6 Traits of writing: ideas, organisation, voice, word choice, sentence fluency and conventions. Written entries may be submitted in mother tongue. The illustrators’ artworks will be judged on a title that describes the idea, and the use of line, colour and composition. Important change in communications- the MS phone number is now +65 6235 5844. The old number (+65 6737 9171) is now Paterson Campus Admissions office. These changes help us to streamline our communication channels with the community and make us more contactable. Bear with us whilst the changes take hold. On Thursday afternoon the auditions were held for this years Middle School production ‘Into The Woods’. A wonderful display of talent was on show from students in Grade 5 through to Grade 8. Going on the auditions alone, it’s going to be a stellar production. Stay tuned for updates. Speaking of performances, a group of ISS students (accompanied by Mr Lebon and Mr Ballinger) will perform a Christmas Concert for the Eurasian Association this Sunday. This has proven to be a wonderful event and a highlight of the festive season for all concerned. Today (Friday) all Grade 6-8 students completed a questionnaire for the Council of International Schools (CIS). This survey is a practical tool that helps teachers leverage the rich cultural diversity of ISS towards better teaching and learning. We will receive results in the new year and these will help guide ISS. On the sporting field ISS recorded their first win of the season in junior varsity football. A solid 7-2 win against Dulwich College. Well done gentlemen.
