Welcome back everyone after what I hope was a restful break. A particularly big welcome to the 9 new students who have joined the ISS family this week. It is always a pleasure to welcome new families into our inclusive multicultural community. A very happy Deepavali (Diwali) on Saturday 29th October. Deepavali is one of the most important Hindu festivals. Deepavali is the celebration of the return of Rama and Sita following the defeat of the evil Ravana by Rama. This festival of lights represents the victory of good over evil. I wish all those of our community who celebrate Deepavali my best wishes for the day. For those of you who do not celebrate Deepavali I hope you enjoy the colour and beauty of this festival of lights. In the coming week Middle School has the Parent Teacher Conferences which is a vital time for parents to discuss with teachers how their child's learning can be further enhanced. The Elementary School 3 way conferences will be the following week on 16th November. Please note there will be no school for ES students on the 16th November as they should attend the 3 way conference with their parents. As we did last year there will als be a Book Fair in the Lbrary on this day. Elementary School News The Design Center, a new addition to the Paterson Campus this year, has been busy. This new learning space is a dedicated environment for our students and teachers to explore and experience a “Design Thinking” project with links to their grade level unit of inquiry. The students have been planning/brainstorming, prototyping and/or creating. While inquiring into mechanical, potential and kinetic energy, our Grade 5 students worked in the design center to design catapults using skewers, elastic bands and marshmallows! A group of Grade 4 students began their design thinking process in class during a math inquiry. They then worked in the design center as they went through the ideation process, changing their device to a 5 second timer from a 10 second timer. Well, it’s a slightly wet MS today after a very soggy Swim Gala at CCAB swimming pool on Evans Rd. Not much luck with the Swim Gala over the last few years with haze putting a stop to last years event and this year it rained the entire day (very un-Singapore like). As we are a resilient and happy bunch in the MS, the students and teachers made the most of what they were presented with and the swim gala went on as planned. Students entered into the swimming events with gusto and enthusiasm and overall a most pleasing day. Lots of happy, if not a little damp, smiles all round. Well done all concerned, and especially Ms Allan and Mr Bell (G9-10) for organising. Next week, the first reports of the academic year comes home. The Semester One Interim Report will be available via ManageBac from Friday, 14th September. This report contains a comment from each student’s homeroom teacher and an assessment of the Approaches To Learning (ATL) for each subject. The homeroom comment will review the student's start to the school year. The ATLs indicate how each student has settled into the class and the their commitment to learn. These reports can be further discussed at Parent Teacher Conferences, that happen on the Wednesday 2nd November (start at 17:00) and Wednesday 9th November (start at 15:00). Hope you all have a great weekend. Upcoming Events: Friday, 14th October - International Day 17-26th October - Mid Semester Break for students 24-26th October - No school for students, Teacher Inservice Thursday 27th October- Students return to school Wednesday, 2nd November - Parent Teacher Conferences (PTC) 5PM - 8PM Saturday, 5th November - Urgent Run Wednesday, 9th November - Parent Teacher Conferences (PTC) 3PM - 5PM |
