Our students have completed their examination week and they all did a fantastic job, everyone turned up on time and completed their examinations according to the IB regulations. These examinations help prepare our students for their finals in the coming years. We know that ‘Practice Makes Perfect’ and hence we support our students by providing them with opportunities to have examinations under the full IB regulations. When they eventually take their finals, they are well prepared and understand the processes involved.
We ended our week with a Grade 9 field trip to Marina Barrage and NeWater - this trip provides the students with further learning opportunities to support their unit on ‘Urban Environments’. Our Grade 11 Art students visited La Salle to hear more about the degree courses they offer and to see La Salle students in action. ISS High School Diploma We are pleased to announce our ISS High School Diploma programme that is an alternative to the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IBDP), the ISS High School Diploma (HSD) programme will be offered for Grade 9 (G9) to Grade 12 (G12) students. This will be introduced in the new school year commencing August 2019. For students who prefer not to pursue the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IBDP), the ISS HSD is an option that will enable students to graduate at Grade 12 and apply for entry into Universities, in Australia, Europe, USA, under certain conditions. The ISS HSD includes practical vocational experience, as well as attachments to polytechnics and other educational institutions included in the curriculum. The core benefit of the ISS HSD is that students will be given the opportunity to pursue a vocation that they are passionate about or have a strong interest in, thereby helping our students realise their individual potential in a more personal, tangible and pronounced manner. International Day Next Friday 7th December, we have our International Day celebration at Paterson campus, everyone is welcome to come along. Here is the link to the website that has all the details of the day: https://sites.google.com/iss.edu.sg/international-day-iss/home Personal Project Exhibition We have our Personal Project Exhibition on the 11th December by our Grade 10 students from 3pm - everyone is welcome to come and see the work of our students. Festival of Lights On Wednesday 12th December we have our annual music evening: Festival of Lights starting at 6:30pm. Again everyone is welcome to join this wonderful evening event. Congratulations to the following students from G12: Kaho, Wei (Benjamin), Lucinda, Euijin (Rachel) and from G11: Yewan (Daisy), Zixuan, Yen-ju (Ruby), Zhihao (Rock), Riko and Aye Nyein Po (ANP) on their wonderful displays of art work last night. ISS along with 15 other schools participate in the IN Art Exhibition every year that is hosted by the Australian High Commission and provides our students with an opportunity to discuss and share their work with a wide audience. Ms Larue is dedicated to providing our students with learning experiences that embrace the IB Learner profile as communicators, risk-takers and reflective. We also had two of our DP Musicians chosen to play the piano during the evening; Mingzuo (Sam) and Yinman (Angelica). If you were unable to attend the opening night, you can still go along and see the exhibition which closes on 18 January 2019.
International Day As part of the preparations for International Day, one Grade 12 Kampong class met up with their Grade 2 counterparts during a lunchtime this week. They took photos of nature on campus and on the metal walkway on Preston Road with the aim to create a collage that represents SDG 15 and biodiversity in Singapore and to contribute to iNaturalist. The students had a wonderful time getting to know each other and to share the wonderful sites along the walk. Royindha Refugee Fundraising Our Grade 10 students collaborated to fund raise for the Royindha Refugee’s through a sale of delicious food and snacks and a badminton tournament on Friday. All proceeds raised will be donated to the Royindha Refugees. Take Action through Service is an important core component of the IB programme and our students are provided with many opportunities throughout their time at ISS to take on leadership roles and really make a difference for the less fortunate. Well done to all of the Grade 10’s involved in the event. IB Pathways Meeting for Grade 10 On Thursday evening our hall was packed with students, parents and guardians to hear about the various pathways available for students after Grade 10 at ISS. Ms. Bleyberg our DP coordinator shared with the audience the different subjects and options available to students. She also explained about the extensive process the students will be involved in as they begin to consider their future. At ISS we start with the information evening, then a subject fair that is led by our Grade 11’s. The Grade 10’s will also participate in a job fair, our World of Work programme, along with individual interviews with our University advisor and DP coordinator. All of these events help support the decision process for the students as they consider their higher education options and the best subjects to support them. On Tuesday we recognised World Kindness Day and every student received a note and chocolate from the teachers as they came into school. A great start to the day and it was lovely to see the smiles on their faces.
Our Assembly this week focused on the IB Learner Profile ‘Principled’: We act with integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of fairness and justice, and with respect for the dignity and rights of people everywhere. We take responsibility for our actions and their consequences. Congratulations to the following students. We wish to challenge the stigma and discrimination that results in physical, verbal, emotional, and financial violence’ Vanesa spoke with our Grade 11 English B students who are currently reading the novel ‘Sold’ by Patricia McCormick and also our Dressember ECA group about the Sex Industry in Singapore and shared many facts and information about the stigma attached to the industry. Our students asked some meaningful questions and left with a deeper understanding. The IN Art Exhibition opens on Wednesday evening at 6:30pm at the Australian High Commission. All of our IB DP Visual Art graduates have work on display. The Exhibition will be on view for the next month. On Thursday 22nd Nov. our DP coordinator, Ms. Bleyberg will be hosting a Grade 11/12 Information evening about pathways after MYP. This is for all parents and guardians of Grade 10 students. Information on the courses we offer, the different pathways students can follow and the various components that contribute to the Diploma Programme will be explained. An invitation to our Grade 10 community was sent last week and we look forward to seeing you all. We had a fantastic representative of delegates at the Model United Nations (MUN) hosted at Overseas Family School (OFSMUN XI) last weekend. MUN is an educational simulation and/or academic activity in which students can learn about diplomacy, international relations, and the United Nations. It involves debating, particularly in a political context, with students who are from different schools. It attempts to replicate a real United Nations conference, and allows participating students to develop awareness of current issues. Our students were involved throughout the two and half day conference. Topics such as Peace and Security, Human Rights and Environment to name just a few were debated and resolutions put forward with supporting arguments and evidence. MUN provides our students with opportunities to embrace the IB Learner profile as communicators, thinkers and inquirers.
This past week we have been focussing on celebrations and being grateful for all that we have achieved. Our Grade 11's were recognised at a MYP Celebration Assembly for their success in Grade 10 and received either a MYP Certificate, MYP Results and/or Language Certificate. Our Student Council hosted a wonderful lunchtime BBQ for the students followed by an after school ‘Teacher Appreciation BBQ’ for staff. This coming week, we have the Step One consultant meeting our Grade 10 students to review the Careers Assessment results and explain the report. The consultant is also available for one to one meetings with parents and students. The careers assessment is just one of many on-going activities we complete in preparing our students for the diploma programme. On November 22nd we have the IB Information Evening for all Grade 10 students and parents/guardians. Invitations for this event will be sent next week. Our IBDP Grade-11 Chemistry students recently celebrated International Mole-Day by creating informative posters for the school community. Every year October 23 is celebrated from 6:02 a.m. to 6:02 p.m. as Mole Day by community of Chemists, Scientists, Chemistry students and teachers to commemorate the Avogadro's number (6.02 x 10^23) which is a basic unit of measurement in Chemistry. This time and date is derived from the number and the main idea of celebrating this day is to foster interest in Chemistry. Our students identified the contributions of Amedeo Carlo Avogadro an Italian Scientist in the field of Chemistry, learnt about the 'mole-concept' which is a part of their upcoming unit and created the posters to share this to the wider school community.
We had fantastic success in the sporting arena this week with our Varsity U19 Girls Volleyball team clinching the Gold Medal for their division. Our Varsity U19 Boys Volleyball team and Football team also completed their season and demonstrated great sportsmanship and development. We had a visit this week from Erdal (alumni class of 2014) who spoke to our G11 and G12 about life after ISS. It was wonderful to hear his inspirational talk and about his passion for Football that he has managed to make a career off.
