This week our students have been engaged in many activities that support learning outside of the classroom. Our Grade 11 DP English B students are reading 'The Circle' and analysing key scenes that take place in nature, our teachers took them all for a walk in Hort Park to inspire them as they emulate the style of writing by Dave Eggers. Grade 10 MYP Art students attended the 'Tree of Life-Knowledge in Material' Art Exhibition at the NTU Centre for Contemporary Art in Gillman Barracks where students experienced drawing sessions in the gallery and explored the links between science - technology and craft making traditions.
We ended our week with a wonderful lunchtime concert by our Grade 12 DP Music students. Well done to all of the performers who made all of us feel special as we celebrated “Teacher’s Day’. Parents are welcome to join us on Thursday at 12:05pm. These past few weeks has seen our students working together and campaigning as teams to take on the roles in our Student Council. We had five teams made up of MYP and DP students interview to a teacher panel, sharing their vision for the school and aspirations for the Student Council. On Tuesday, three teams were chosen to present to the student body, followed by elections. Congratulations to the winning team; Schezin - Student Council President, Emellia - Vice- President, Taegyun - Treasurer and Chaewon as Secretary. The elected team will be involved in leadership training with Ms Vald, our Student Council Mentor and will also work closely with student representatives as they work towards their vision. Congratulations Student Council: Our DP ESS students have launched our e-waste campaign to help raise awareness of e-waste in our homes and to encourage students and families to recycle any old electrical items. We are the only school in Singapore that is a venue partner with National Environment Agency and has e-waste recycle bins located at both of our campuses. On Friday our Grade 10 students spent ½ of the day in a range of workshops to support the Personal Project process that they have all started. Students reviewed ATL skills, unpacked the assessment criteria and presented their chosen topic and global context to a small group of their peers and teachers. The Personal Project is a mandatory element of the MYP in Grade 10 and the grade awarded contributes towards their final MYP Certificate. Last Tuesday over 50 parents came to our 'Meet the Teachers and ‘Week Without Walls (WWW)’ evening and they were provided with details about the expectations and opportunities their student at the High School can expect for the coming year. It was lovely to meet so many new parents and all our returning parents too. Details about our upcoming WWW trips were shared and we had our trip providers from Ecofields and Dorsel Effect on hand to explain the trip itineraries. The WWW blog will be available to access in the near future with updated details. Welcome to the new academic year and I hope you have all returned refreshed from your break. This week there has been a real buzz around the school with returning students re-establishing friendships and new students encountering the 'stairs' for the first time! Our week started with many activities that introduced students to the High School. Students in Grade 9 and Grade 11 were engaged in many activities providing them with time to get to know each other and to deepen their understanding of the educational programmes the will be studying. Our Grade 10 and Grade 12 students got down to business quickly with Extended Essay and Personal Project activities that provided them with opportunities to think critically and focus on the coming year.
