Our Grade 10 and Grade 12 students completed their IB Preparation Examinations this week and will be receiving feedback over the coming weeks. Teachers and students will collaboratively work together to identify areas of strength and areas for improvement, along with setting targets and goals for each subject as final preparations for the examinations in May. Our Wellness Wednesday this semester has a different format and is linked to our four houses: Newton, Raffles, Orchard and Somerset. Students now go to rooms that have students of all grades together according to House. Already we have seen students of differing grades communicate and support each other during the Wellness Wednesday session. This is a true reflection of our IB Learner Profile ‘Communicator’ that is our theme for this month. We are drawing to the close of our Basketball season with our Girls and Boys teams playing their final games - we have observed a fantastic willingness to work as a team, to bounce back from defeat - truly resilient, and always encouraging each other in every game. Well done to all our players. We welcomed the parents of our Grade 8 students to the High School on Friday, they learnt more about the MYP, DP and HSD pathways we offer and enjoyed a tour around our premises. Along with welcoming parents, we also welcomed new students to the High School in Grade 9 and 10, and look forward to more joining us after CNY. International Schools Assessment (ISA) - Grade 9 parents ONLY A reminder that we have an ISA information morning on Thursday 31 January starting at 8AM. This will be in Changi Hall. In the session you find out about what is the ISA and why do we use this external assessment at ISS. There will be a practical element of completing part of the assessment as well. No study required! RSVP here. IB DP Art Exhibition We are excited to invite the ISS Community to our Reception on Tuesday 29th from 5pm - 8pm in our hall at Preston campus. Do join us for this wonderful exhibition of our students Art work. Our Preparation examinations have been going smoothly this week and it is clear the students have been spending time to prepare themselves and to get the best from the Preparation exams. They end for all students next week on Wednesday 23rd January.
We look forward to our Grade 10 Taster Day on Tuesday when our students will learn more about the various courses we offer in the IB DP and HSD and get a real taste of what’s to come. The day ends with a session on the upcoming World of Work where all Grade 10 students will participate in a 3-day job shadow or internship in a company placement in the community. As a part of this programme, we host an event called "Speed Careers", which is modelled after the speed dating format where students will rotate between different tables at set intervals of time. At the different tables, we are looking for professionals who have been involved in a range of career fields to whom students may ask questions. Questions will be related to their career paths, university majors and influences that have impacted decisions. We would love to have ISS community members involved in this activity in order to provide a wide range of careers and job-related experiences for students to learn from. What: Volunteers needed for an event that provides Grade 10 students with the chance to explore a variety of career fields through talking with adults who have worked in related career fields. When: Wednesday, 30 January from 1:45-13:00 (volunteers to arrive at 14:00) Where: Preston Campus Volunteer Sign-ups: Google Form Volunteer Sign-up deadline: January 25 Questions: Patricia Vlad [email protected] or Chris Hoddinott [email protected] These are just some of the many activities we run for our Grade 10 students as they decide on the educational pathway and career they wish to follow in the future. Grade 9 Parents - ISA assessments On Monday you will receive your letter outlining this years ISA. The ISA assessment program is designed specifically for students in international schools in Grades 3–9. It is based on the internationally endorsed reading, mathematical literacy and scientific literacy frameworks of the OECD's Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). (https://www.acer.org/au/isa) This is an annual data point the school uses to establish learning trends within the school and in comparison to other similar schools to ISS. We will be inviting you to join us for a background and information session on Thursday 31st January at Paterson Campus (08:00am) Upcoming Events IB DP Art Exhibition: 29th January 2019 -Preston Hall @5pm Welcome to 2019 and a very Happy New Year. It was lovely to greet all our students returning to school this week. We are excited to welcome so many new students and to see ISS's student population grow. For those of you new to ISS, a very big welcome to the ISS family and I look forward to meeting all of you over the coming weeks. We kicked of the week with a Parent Welcome meeting to share some of the changes we have recently implemented at Preston campus and to up date parents about the Law in Singapore and how to access our Teaching and Learning and Communication platform - ManageBac.
This month we are focusing on the IB Learner Profile 'Communicators' and this supports our initiative to not permit students to use their cell phones from 8am - 3pm in school; unless a teacher gives them permission. The buzz during lunchtime is wonderful to hear as conversations and friendships have already started to grow. We request that you support this initiative and avoid sending messages or trying to contact your child/ward during the school day. Our grade 12 students begin their IB Preparation exams on Monday - these will run for 10 days at school. Our Grade 10 students will begin their IB MYP Preparation exams from Thursday - these run for three days at school. All students have been provided with their timetables and revision schedules. Students are only expected to attend school for their examinations. Normal lessons will not be in progress for Grade 10 and Grade 12 students during this time. We wish them all the best in the examinations. Keep the date free for PYP/MYP Information Coffee morning on ISA Assessment Grades 3 - 9. This will happen at our Paterson campus in Changi Hall on 28 January 8.00 am - 9.00am. (Note this is for Grade 9 parents.) Have a great weekend! |
