This week Grade 6 students visited the NEWater Visitor Centre to support their learning in the Science unit: My Pure Earth. The centre promotes water sustainability in Singapore. Students learned how NEWater is produced through an interactive tour and educational workshop.
Last evening, it was my pleasure to attend my first ISS Festival of Lights, what a joy it was to hear and see our High School students as they danced, sang and played a variety of instruments. I look forward to next year’s festival when the whole school will be present at Preston. This evening is a late night at Paterson with the Aladdin cast, crew and volunteers rehearsing and trying on sample costumes. The show is on track and excellent progress is being made towards opening night on March 11th 2020. I look forward to seeing you at the first ISS Christmas fair tomorrow, there is a wonderful variety of stalls, games to play and food and drinks to be purchased. Flags were being ironed today and being made ready for International Day next Friday, see you at the parade! You will receive a note from your child’s teacher about pick up arrangements, please make sure you return the form so that all teachers know how every child will go home on that day at the end of the International Day event. On Wednesday 11th December there will be a meeting for parents who have volunteered to help with home languages in Semester 2, more information will be sent out on Tuesday 10th December. Upcoming Events:
Susan Tilney. As we continue to plan and look forward to uniting Paterson and Preston campuses students and teachers from Grade 6, 7 and 8 visited the Preston campus this week.
At Thursday’s Parent Coffee the school architect, Mr. Lem, shared an update of renovation plans and construction work as well as how the works are progressing at Preston. Students were very interested in the heritage buildings and enjoyed stories from Mr. Adamberry and Ms. Edwards about their days as students at ISS. Ms. Berna, Paterson counsellor, and Ms. Jo, High School counsellor, made a very thought-provoking and highly relevant presentation about technology this week as part of the "Conversations with Counsellors" workshop series. Thank you to the many parents who participated. The Under 14 football team had a very successful first match, well done team! On Friday 29th November we hosted some coaches from the Real Madrid Singapore soccer school as part of our monthly House Event. Plans had to be adjusted at the last minute due to torrential rain and a waterlogged field. This didn’t dampen our spirits as students enthusiastically dribbled, controlled, trapped and shot balls. Also on 29th November, Middle School students planned and led a Middle School Christmas party, complete with decorations, party games, party music and party food. All students at Paterson campus wore either “Christmas colours” or house colours (or both) and entered into the spirit of a busy and fun day. Donations are being collected for #WehaveaDreamXmas, to support migrant workers in Singapore. Thank you for all the generous donations that were received today, we will continue with the drive for a few more days. Next week is the last week for ECAs and ASA’s this Semester with ECAs on 3rd, 4th and 5th December and the last ASA on Friday 6th December. Upcoming Events:
Have a lovely weekend, Susan Tilney. Friday afternoon assemblies (or Sambutan) at Paterson provide opportunities for students across the campus to make presentations, to share learning, to perform and to be recognised as for example Scientist of the Month or to receive a certificate recognising Learner Profile attributes such as being a thinker or a risk taker. I attended the Elementary assembly today and it was my pleasure to hear a young “guest” musician playing the piano, the whole school sing the school song and Happy Birthday and to be entertained by a newly formed Grade 4 dance group, watch out for more performances from this enthusiastic team!
Elementary students and their teachers were able to get a first look and “feel” for their “new” school when they visited the Preston campus this week. Grades 1 and 3 on Wednesday, Kindergarten and Grade 4 on Thursday and Grades 2 and 5 on Friday. High School student council members shared what they enjoy about learning and “living” at Preston. As students and teachers toured Block 5 we met High School students who have been with ISS since Kindergarten. I joined the tour on Thursday and with us were Ms. Sophia Bustamante, Ms. Fiona Edwards and Mr. Paul Adamberry who all studied as students at the Preston campus, some years ago. We assembled in the cafeteria for a delicious pizza lunch and marvelled at the truly magnificent view through the treetops. As we continue to plan and look forward to uniting Paterson and Preston campuses we have arranged for Grade 6, 7 and 8 students to visit the Preston campus next week. Afternoon lessons at Paterson will continue as normal. I am pleased to let you know that the school architect will share an update of renovation plans and how the works are progressing at Preston at Thursday’s Parent Coffee which will begin as usual at 8.00am in Serangoon Hall. Upcoming Events:
Susan Tilney. Paterson events this week have included: the Grade 2 field trip to the Science Centre as part of their Unit of Inquiry under the theme “How the world works” and activities related to World Kindness Day. Students from every grade gathered together on the playground just after the morning bell and shared kind words with each other. Students then presented certificates of thanks to Paterson staff: the nurse, canteen staff, guards, facilities staff, cleaners, IT staff, secretaries, librarian - people who quietly make a big difference in our everyday lives.
The purpose of World Kindness Day is “to highlight good deeds in the community focusing on the positive power and the common thread of kindness which binds us.” Of course kindness is not just for one day a year. A culture of kindness, random acts of kindness, consideration for others and respect for all are all integral to the spirit of ISS everyday. As we continue to plan and look forward to uniting Paterson and Preston campuses next year we have arranged for Elementary students and their teachers to visit the Preston campus next week. Grades 1 and 3 on Wednesday, Kindergarten and Grade 4 on Thursday and Grades 2 and 5 on Friday. High school students will share what it’s like to be a student at Preston and what they enjoy about learning there, students and teachers will take a tour of Block 5 which is where Elementary will be located next year, of course, renovations have not taken place yet however students will be able to get a first look and “feel” for their “new” school. The visit will finish at lunchtime with a pizza lunch being provided by the school. Afternoon lessons at Paterson will continue as normal. Grade 6, 7 and 8 students will also be visiting the Preston campus in the near future. Upcoming Events:
Have a lovely weekend, Susan Tilney. The hall for full on Thursday evening. Science experiments in Middle School. Students in 4.1 were learning about Korean heritage during Heritage Time this week. Daisy and Lisa prepared google slides to share some information about the Korean culture. The girls then shared the Korean alphabet and numbers and the class practiced learning to write some Korean characters. Following on from our questions about Korea from last week, Grade 3 students then researched and reflected. Grade 1 students learned about Korean dancing. Thank you to the many Middle School parents who joined us in Serangoon Hall on Thursday 22nd August, such a wonderful start to the year. Dr. Alvarez shared latest news of the ISS renovation and construction project as we continue to move towards unification of the school. Middle School teachers outlined the year ahead and presentations were given about the Week Without Walls Service As Action field trips. There will be no regular Middle School classes and all students are required to attend the appropriate trip during the week 7th to 11th October, student learning will be outside ISS school i.e. “without walls”. There will be much more information about the trips in the weeks ahead.
Grade 6 students will travel to Telunas, Indonesia Grade 7 and 8 students will travel to Port Dickson, Malaysia Grade 7 and 8 students will travel to Sok Sabay, Cambodia Grade 4 and 5 students will also be involved in a Week Without Walls field trip to Bintan from 8th to 10th October. There are a couple of busy weeks ahead with several more information events for parents. Elementary School parents will have an opportunity to learn more about the campus unification at Preston Road as well as meeting teachers on Thursday 29th August, please refer to Managebac notice for more information. The first week of the swimming programme has been a great success. Swimming continues for the next 10 weeks and will finish with everyone participating in a swim gala on Friday 8th November, more details closer to the time. The new ECA schedule will be published soon, teacher taught ECAs will be offered on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Should your child like to attend an ECA from an outside provider, these will be on Mondays or Fridays. Next Friday is the last Friday of the month so it is 'free dress' Friday. Please encourage students who wish to participate to bring in a food donation for the Singapore Food Bank. These can be put in the collection containers in Rooms 15 and 16 and Grade 1 students will do some sorting of the food items collected. Upcoming Events:
Elementary News
This is the last blog that I will write to you as Elementary Principal at ISS. What a year it has been for me! I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here and have certainly learned new things and met wonderful new friends from both the staff and student body. Thank you, everyone, for making me welcome and for your loyal support. This week we celebrated the Grade 5’s transition into PYP by having the first ISS Grade 5 Valedictory dinner. This was a formal occasion to celebrate the ‘rite of passage’ from PYP to MYP. The students were formally dressed and enjoyed a sit down dinner, supplied by the PTA. The students were presented with leaving certificates and a gift, and finished off with a disco. Good bye Grade 5s! Next academic year there will be a dedicated ‘mother tongue or home language’ time in the ES. Students will have the opportunity to maintain their mother tongue through these sessions. We are fortunate to have, on our staff, Korean speakers, Russian speakers, Japanese speakers and HIndi speakers. We are hoping that you, the parents, will assist by bringing in your own mother tongue resources and perhaps teaching a small group of students at this time. The MT period will be the lesson before assembly on Friday. Our ES and MS ARt Show this week was absolutely stunning. I am amazed at the talent of Ms HIma in inspiring students to be creative and to produce work at this high level. Congratulations ISS students! You will have no doubt attended the MS production of Once Upon an Island. Mr Lebon invited some ES students to perform under the guidance of Ms Vaughan and Mr Polumbo. It was amazing! By the end of term you will receive the ECA choices for next term. We have surveyed the students and are confident that the offering will be warmly welcomed by the students. Students can choose as many ECAs as they like. Teacher taught ECAs are on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Should your child like to attend an ECA from an outside provider, this will be on Monday or Friday. This week we welcomed Ms Susan Tilney who will be taking over my position and will be Principal of Paterson Campus from August 2019. We wish good luck to our leaving teachers who are flying off to new horizons; Ms Amin and Mr Reid are going to Saudi Arabia Ms Jasinska is going to work in Japan Ms Wolter is relocating to Dubai Ms Bond is returning to Hobart, Tasmania Mr Inman who is going to a school in Germany Mr Taylor is taking up a position of Principal in Kyoto, Japan We wish them well on their next venture in international teaching! We will be welcoming Mr Ronan O’Neill as a PE teacher and two new homeroom teachers; Ms Adamberry and Ms Daria Ignatova. I am sure you will make them welcome at ISS. So I say good-bye to you all - hopefully I will see you at Sports Day on Monday 4 June.Sports Day Kind regards and thanks to you all. Enjoy your summer break!! Elizabeth Middle School news This is the final blog for this academic year. What a week to write about in the final blog. The wonderful showcase of education that is ISS. Teacher movements This time of year is always tinged will some reflection as we farewell some of our community. Our MYP Chinese teacher, Linda Du who is taking a senior position here in Singapore at another school. Safe travels and a bright future to all. We also welcome Mr Gary Serbent who will be coming in to teach Math and Science and Mr Ronan O’Neill who is the ECA and Activities coordinator (and PYP PHE teacher) Once On This Island What a show. What talent on display. Once a again Mr Lebon and his band of merry teachers have brought a vision for performance and drama into ISS and the students and staff have responded in kind with a magnificent performance. Let us not forget the posse of PTA mothers who have worked tirelessly on costumes and catering; and Jaime O (ISS Alumni) for his stage work. Bravo to all involved. Art Exhibition I hope you all got the chance to extend your artistic enjoyment during the play to enjoy the Paterson Campus Arts Exhibition. Ms Atkinson and Ms Hima showcased their students diverse and well developed talents. I did sneak a look at one installation that looked very much like the Middle School Principal! Grade 5 Transition A great few days with the Grade 5 students. They were introduced to life in the MYP through exploration, experiences and activities. All students displayed the open mindedness and communication skills expected of their grounding in the PYP. The teachers are excited to welcome this cohort next year into MYP. Sports Day Monday 3 June is the ISS Sports Day. All the school will head to the Physical Education and Teachers College 2 Malan Road; Singapore 109433. The pleasure has been all mine. Michael Elementary School News
The students of the Elementary School have been working on their final Unit of Inquiry and reflecting on their learning throughout their time here at ISS. Teachers have also been reflecting on their teaching as they complete the final Appraisal process. They are also finalising the school reports which you will receive on June 7. Next week we will welcome Ms Susan Tilney to the school as she prepares to take over as Paterson Campus Principal K-8. She will be here for a week while she becomes acquainted with the staff and students. She will attend the MS coffee morning on Friday. I don’t know where the year has gone! It seems to have passed so quickly and I will be very sad to leave the students and teachers at ISS. Arts Exhibition On Wednesday 29 May and Thursday 30 May, Paterson Campus will hold it’s annual Arts Exhibition. This coincides with the Paterson Production Once On This Island. Other Arts examples you can enjoy will be the exposition in Changi Hall. The festival will run for the full two days. Middle School News The penultimate blog for the year. You would think things are slowing down. Not at ISS! In the next two weeks we have Once On This Island, Sports Day, Grade 8 Farewell, Service as Action Day, and the last day of school for the year. Plus a public holiday thrown in. As we draw this year to a close I would like to thank everyone in the community for their support of the six years I have been a ISS. It is a wonderful parent body, ably supported by committed guardians. All with the same intention to provide a world class IB education to our students. As in all things this can only be done as a team. I have had the privilege to work beside some great teachers in my time. These are the people given the responsibility to develop our students. They do this and more. At the end of their time, we can safely say, our students leave ISS as good people and good global citizens. Well done all. It’s been a great ride! Once On This Island Good luck to cast and crew in next production. The time, effort and dedication is to be applauded. The months have commitment is about to come to the fore and the anticipation is rising. Enough thanks cannot go to Mr Lebon for the energy he puts into the performances and how much he helps the students to grow. Let’s not forget that proceeds from every Paterson production go to Sok Sabay in Cambodia to help in the welfare and education of less privileged students. Bravo! Sports Day Monday 3 June is the ISS Sports Day. All the school will head to the Physical Education and Teachers College 2 Malan Road; Singapore 109433. Grade 6-8 will leave from Paterson Campus at normal school time (08:10) after Kampong. Students will return to Paterson Campus at 12:30pm. Students will be dismissed from Paterson Campus. The purpose of this outing is for the MS students to develop their skills of negotiation, communication and organisation, in the environments of the flora and fauna found within the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve. The trip will also help to gain a greater appreciation of the aims of the UN Sustainable Development Goal #15, Life on Land. Each student will be involved in a pre and post outing presentation regarding the flora and fauna of the park, and will be challenged to complete activities which will allow them to appreciate the purposes of the site, and immerse themselves into what can been seen and heard in the nature reserve. Have a great weekend MT Elementary School News
This week we have celebrated the results of the ISA, an external assessment tool that we use once a year to measure our students’ achievement compared to similar schools around the world. It is important for us, as a school, to know that our programmes are meeting the needs of our students and world standards. Students from grade 3 to 5, who sat the assessment in February, will receive their individual results today from your class teacher. Please be reminded that this is just one assessment tool that we use and depends on how the student feels on that particular day. It is not the only indicator of success at ISS. Our Grade 3,4 and 5 Camps were enjoyed by both students and teachers, eve though everyone returned exhausted! Grade 5 went to Loola, a camp specifically designed to support educational programmes. Students in Grade 5 participated in many activities, including meeting the family that were the recipients of the Clear Water Toilet system. Grades 3 & 4 spent Monday night sleeping in tents at the SIngapore Zoo! We had a terrific time at the zoo, pitching tents and seeing animals behind the scenes. The terrible storm that hit during the day caused a delay in our tent pitching and the elephant session, but by 10pm the students were all tucked up in bed, with we teachers expected to sleep on camp beds close by. I don’t think any teacher slept that night! Teachers from all parts of the school give up their own family time to take students on camp. In MS and HS this is often for a whole week and teachers do this willingly for the good of the students. When students return from camp tired, teachers are also tired. A heartfelt thank you to the teachers when you pick your students up goes a long way! As mentioned last week, teachers are considering class lists for the next academic year. If you are leaving the school please let us know. The Grade 5 Valedictory Dinner takes place in Changi Hall on Wednesday 29 May. The students should wear ‘smart casual’. On 30 & 31 May Grade 5 will participate in the MS transitions days as they get to know how Middle School works. Enjoy your Vesak weekend! Middle School News Happy week 35 of the school year, everyone. Wow that end of the year school year train is really at the platform but with so many things still to get on board! Last week we had the Space Camps promotion (which is ongoing and generating plenty of interest). If you are still interested contact with Dr Jeremiah. We also have Grade 8 preparing for the next part of their learning journey. Plus Once On This Island, Sports Day, Grade 5 transitions and Service As Action Day! Toot toot. Off we go Parent Coffee Morning On Friday 31st May we invite parents to join our last coffee morning of the year. This meeting will serve a number of purposes. Welcome our Grade 5 parents into the IB MYP and Middle School (MS); introduce the new language options available in MS; and introduce the new leadership structure for 2019-20. An invitation will go out over the weekend. Exam Week Each year the Grade 6-8 are given the opportunity to experience formal examinations. This helps them prepare and organise themselves as they progress through the IB system. Understanding expectations of completing an assessment in a large group in an examination centre is all part of the Approaches To Learning of an IB student. This becomes a learning journey for our parents as well. Sometimes experiencing formal examinations for the first since their own school days. So well done everyone on what has been a successful week. Once On This Island The Paterson Production is in its final rehearsal week. We are slowly seeing Serangoon Hall turn into an idyllic island surrounded by cool seas and light winds. Students and staff are into their last full week of rehearsals. Tickets are still available through Ms Chin and all enquiries can be sent to [email protected]. A note from the school detailing the event was sent to all parents and guardians via ManageBac All parents are strongly encouraged to join us. Please be reminded to wear your parent ID as it is a requirement of the venue. Have a great long weekend everyone MT Elementary School News Our thanks go to the PTA who kindly donated some money from the SIlent Auction to our Clear Water Toilet system for a family on Bintan. The Grade 5 students, who return from their camp tonight, 10 May, visited the family as the system was being built. The students were humbled by the fact that this family has lived for so long in their house in the village without this single ‘human right’. You will see from the photographs that the Grade 5 camp to Bintan has been very successful and the students have become more aware of our Sustainable Development Goals. Paterson campus welcomed some teachers from Manila who were eager to learn more about our programme and how we develop the PYP. The teachers visited classrooms, spoke with students and educators and attended the ES assembly. This is another example of sharing good practice around the world. Shortly our teachers will be deciding on class lists for the 2019/2020 academic year. If you know that your child will be leaving the school, please let us know as we will start the process with those students who have indicated their commitment. Teachers take into account the students’ personality, friendship groups and gender as they prepare their lists for consideration. The class lists will be available at the beginning of the new school year. The school year has passed so quickly and my time at Paterson Campus will soon be over; Ms Susan Tilney, who will be the new Paterson Campus Principal will be visiting the school from 27 May, so you will see her around the classes and at the Grade 5 Valedictory Dinner on May 29. Dates to remember: Grade 3 & 4 Camp Monday & Tuesday 13 & 14 May (Singapore Zoo) Grade 5 Valedictory Dinner Wednesday 29 May (students only) Sports Day June 3 Middle School News Greetings everyone and welcome to another full week in the Middle School. We have had football competitions, talks of space travel and a movie night all in the space of five days. CASE Space Camp On Wednesday evening, we welcomed representatives from Actura and CASE to talk to our Middle School students and parents about an exciting new collaboration - a space camp scheduled for next summer, June-July 2020. ISS is the first school in Singapore to offer this once in a lifetime opportunity for our current G6-8 students, and we are very excited to make it happen! If you missed this week’s session and would like to more, please contact Dr Jeremiah. Movie Night Our Super Student Council (SSC) have been busy organising a Movie Night tonight, as a way to give back to the student community and to help facilitate some much needed balance in the lead up to Exam Week next week. Great initiative, leadership and creativity in demonstrating the IB Learner Profile attributes within our Middle School. Kampong Cup This week, the G7/G8 Girls finished their round of Kampong Cup football games. Final winners were from Kampong Rong - Hina, Altea, Tanisha, Daria and Yaqi. A fantastic collaborative effort, and another great way for our Middle School students to bring balance to their personal and academic schedules! R U OK? Day Building further on personal balance, our Grade 8 SSC decided to raise mental health awareness for our Middle School community in Sambutan today. They planned an engaging and informative presentation to educate, and a fun Kahoot activity to reinforce concepts for the students. Further proof of the strong student-led opportunities for student leaders to take action within our Middle School. Mental health is particularly important as we commence Exam Week next week, and prepare for the end of the academic year. Overall, a wonderful and busy week! We would like to end with a gentle reminder to parents/guardians to share their intentions of whether they plan to continue at ISS next year. Class sizes and resourcing are important considerations for a successful start for next academic year. Elementary News
There is a real buzz around the school as students in Grades 3 to 5 prepare for their camps. Grade 5 leave on 8 May and travel to Bintan where they will participate in activities associated with the Global Goals. Money has been raised to supply a Clear Water toilet system for an indigenous family living close to the camp and the students will be part of the build. They will be investigating eco-systems associated with mangroves and the surrounding water and will be exposed to how solar power is used to power everything at the camp.. The Grade 5s leave from Tanah Merah ferry terminal at 8.00 am on Wednesday 8 May. Grades 3 and 4 will go to the Singapore Zoo for a sleepover on 13 & 14 May. This camp promises to be exciting as the students (and the staff!!) will be sleeping among the trees. Thank you to those parents who attended the Student Led Conferences last Friday; these were invaluable to the students as they were able to discuss their learning in mother tongue when appropriate. Our Elementary students were very welcoming to our visitors from ETU School in Beijing who were at school for a technology camp. Students from all grades showed the attributes of the Learner Profile as they took the students around the school and exchanged email addresses when they left. Well done ISS! Please keep 24 May free to attend the Art Exhibition, 25 May for the PTA Jumble Sale and 29 May for the Grade 5 students’ Valedictory Dinner. See you there!! Middle School News Greetings everyone and happy Friday. As always the challenge in schools is keeping up with the trends in society. Today in Kampongs and in Sambutan, as a school, we will continue to reflect on positive digital behaviours. The work and education we do with the students is only as effective as the support that parents and guardians provide at home. For this we thank you and be remind ourselves that it is an ongoing effort. Kampong Cup The lunchtime football competition continues with the G7-8 girls going head to head. Once again congratulations to Team Palumbo #1 for winning Grade 6 on a countback! With only a few rounds to go, it will be the boys chance to shine next in the lunchtime football competition. ACSIS This week ISS finished its commitments to school sport, with a win in the basketball. The U14 boys lead by Coach Orgee held on in an extra time nail biter. Well done to all that have competed over the year. We look forward to seeing boys and girls out and about in Singapore next season being risk takers and balanced in their education. Bamboo Straw Girl Mel aka the Bamboo Straw Girl returned for another visit to ISS. Bringing her full range of bamboo and sustainable wares she was a most popular figure at lunchtime. Examination Week Exam week is not far away. Students have been given their timetables this week. This is a good time to create a subject review and study schedule for students. Setting up environments that are clear of clutter, well lit, and good oxygen flow will also contribute to positive study habits. Once On This Island With only seven rehearsals to go before showtime, the cast and crew are getting excited about the production. The scene is set and work is all but done and now we just await Mr Lebon to call out ‘lights and action’. Jumble Sale On Saturday 25 May from 8am-12am the PTA will hold a Jumble Sale/Garage Sale/ Yard Sale at the Paterson Campus. More details to follow but get organised to turn that trash into treasure! Have a great weekend MT |
