Elementary School News
This week we have celebrated the results of the ISA, an external assessment tool that we use once a year to measure our students’ achievement compared to similar schools around the world. It is important for us, as a school, to know that our programmes are meeting the needs of our students and world standards. Students from grade 3 to 5, who sat the assessment in February, will receive their individual results today from your class teacher. Please be reminded that this is just one assessment tool that we use and depends on how the student feels on that particular day. It is not the only indicator of success at ISS. Our Grade 3,4 and 5 Camps were enjoyed by both students and teachers, eve though everyone returned exhausted! Grade 5 went to Loola, a camp specifically designed to support educational programmes. Students in Grade 5 participated in many activities, including meeting the family that were the recipients of the Clear Water Toilet system. Grades 3 & 4 spent Monday night sleeping in tents at the SIngapore Zoo! We had a terrific time at the zoo, pitching tents and seeing animals behind the scenes. The terrible storm that hit during the day caused a delay in our tent pitching and the elephant session, but by 10pm the students were all tucked up in bed, with we teachers expected to sleep on camp beds close by. I don’t think any teacher slept that night! Teachers from all parts of the school give up their own family time to take students on camp. In MS and HS this is often for a whole week and teachers do this willingly for the good of the students. When students return from camp tired, teachers are also tired. A heartfelt thank you to the teachers when you pick your students up goes a long way! As mentioned last week, teachers are considering class lists for the next academic year. If you are leaving the school please let us know. The Grade 5 Valedictory Dinner takes place in Changi Hall on Wednesday 29 May. The students should wear ‘smart casual’. On 30 & 31 May Grade 5 will participate in the MS transitions days as they get to know how Middle School works. Enjoy your Vesak weekend! Middle School News Happy week 35 of the school year, everyone. Wow that end of the year school year train is really at the platform but with so many things still to get on board! Last week we had the Space Camps promotion (which is ongoing and generating plenty of interest). If you are still interested contact with Dr Jeremiah. We also have Grade 8 preparing for the next part of their learning journey. Plus Once On This Island, Sports Day, Grade 5 transitions and Service As Action Day! Toot toot. Off we go Parent Coffee Morning On Friday 31st May we invite parents to join our last coffee morning of the year. This meeting will serve a number of purposes. Welcome our Grade 5 parents into the IB MYP and Middle School (MS); introduce the new language options available in MS; and introduce the new leadership structure for 2019-20. An invitation will go out over the weekend. Exam Week Each year the Grade 6-8 are given the opportunity to experience formal examinations. This helps them prepare and organise themselves as they progress through the IB system. Understanding expectations of completing an assessment in a large group in an examination centre is all part of the Approaches To Learning of an IB student. This becomes a learning journey for our parents as well. Sometimes experiencing formal examinations for the first since their own school days. So well done everyone on what has been a successful week. Once On This Island The Paterson Production is in its final rehearsal week. We are slowly seeing Serangoon Hall turn into an idyllic island surrounded by cool seas and light winds. Students and staff are into their last full week of rehearsals. Tickets are still available through Ms Chin and all enquiries can be sent to [email protected]. Sports Day Monday 3 June is the ISS Sports Day. All the school will head to the Physical Education and Teachers College 2 Malan Road; Singapore 109433. Grade 6-8 will leave from Paterson Campus at normal school time (08:10) after Kampong. Students will return to Paterson Campus at 12:30pm. Students will be dismissed from Paterson Campus. A note from the school detailing the event was sent to all parents and guardians via ManageBac All parents are strongly encouraged to join us. Please be reminded to wear your parent ID as it is a requirement of the venue. Have a great long weekend everyone MT Comments are closed.
