As we complete the first few days of Home Based Learning I take this opportunity to share some images from learning from home and to sincerely thank all students, parents and teachers for your active and enthusiastic participation.
This week I would like to focus on the Grade 5 PYP Exhibition. Although not quite in the way that we had planned, or using approaches from previous years, the exhibition will take place, most likely in a virtual way. This is the culminating project that all IB PYP students enage in and it also helps prepare Elementary students for the next phase in their education. It unites students, teachers, parents and other members of the school community in a collaborative experience that incorporates the essential elements of the PYP. Students apply their learning from previous years and reflect on their journey through the PYP. An essential element of the exhibition is for students to demonstrate how they can take action as a result of their interests and learning. Students use Approaches to Learning skills such as Social Skills, Communication Skills, Thinking Skills, Research Skills and Self-Management Skills. Students identify a real-life issue or problem that interests them. They carry out an open-ended inquiry into that real-life issue or problem. Teachers guide students through the exhibition process and students present their exhibition to the school community. Parents also have a role. As well as offering encouragement and support, parents can discuss the process with students along the way, help them access resources – such as people, places, media, etc., ensure that Exhibition homework is completed in a timely manner and celebrate with the students by “attending” Exhibition Day. This will be the last blog for a few weeks, look out for a "Vlog" series coming your way very soon! Kindest wishes and a Happy Easter to those celebrating Susan Tilney.

On Wednesday Grade 1 experienced what it was like to be in a 1949’s classroom! Ms Leah and Mrs Hayward dressed themselves in clothes from the 1940s, the classrooms were reorganised so that the desks were in rows, and the students were ‘seen but not heard’. Students learned that manners were very important, that they had to address their teachers as Ma’am and were taught the same thing at the same time. The students were certainly offered a new experience! This week has been a busy week for the Grade 5s as they prepare for their Exhibition next week. Tuesday and Wednesday 23 and 24 April will be our ‘Exhibition’ Days and the whole community is invited! The PYP teachers have been reviewing the Programme of Inquiry for the next academic year, in line with the latest research from the IB. Students will enjoy a myriad of inquiries that encourages authentic and relevant learning. You will have seen how our Kindergarten programme is evolving into a Reggio inspired learning space. From August we will be offering places to 3+ year olds with an option of a two, three and five day programme for all Kindergarten children. You are welcome to visit the Kindergarten at any time to get a ‘feel’ of what this looks like. We wish you a pleasant long weekend. Middle School News Greetings everyone and welcome to the Thursday version of the Friday Blog! Yes tomorrow is Good Friday which plays a part in the Easter celebrations recognised here in Singapore as a public holiday. The Kampong Cup With STEAM Week over for another year and the highs and personalities it has provided you would think a quiet week in Middle School would be in order. Not at ISS! This week we ‘kicked off’ The Kampong Cup (TKC). The TKC is a football competition between each of the Kampongs. Starting with Grade 6 girls and finishing with Grade 8 boys. All students are members of a Kampong team playing football against other teams in their grade. This will culminate towards the end of Semester Two with the overall highest point scoring Kampong team. Why run the TKC? Student well being in short. These activities help students build relationships in team settings, improve fitness, create common goals and above all are enjoyable and satisfying. Grade 8 Many things happening in the life of a Grade 8 student right now. They are currently selecting their Arts and Design classes; then next Tuesday they travel to Preston Campus to experience a taste of ‘Grade 9’ and the explore a new campus and finally on Thursday and Friday at Paterson Campus there are interviews with Mr Hayward (MYP Coordinator) and Mrs Edwards (Language Acquisition Leader) in preparation for Grade 9. To everyone have a good long weekend. Michael |
